Wegovy vs Ozempic: What Is the Difference?
Wegovy and Ozempic are both made by Novo Nordisk and both contain the same active ingredient: semaglutide. They are GLP-1 receptor agonists, which means they slow gastric emptying, reduce appetite, and help steady blood sugar. The science underneath the two pens is essentially identical.
The real difference is what they are approved for. Ozempic is approved to treat type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is approved specifically for weight management. That distinction drives the dosing: Wegovy goes up to a higher maintenance dose (2.4 mg) than Ozempic typically does, because the weight-loss indication was studied at that level.
Insurance and access also differ. Because Ozempic is a diabetes drug, it is sometimes covered when Wegovy is not, which is why some people are prescribed one over the other for reasons that have nothing to do with the medicine itself.
For your daily routine, the experience is very similar: a once-weekly injection, a slow titration schedule to limit nausea, and the same core side effects (nausea, constipation, fatigue) that tend to ease after the first weeks. The food strategy is also the same: protein first, fiber always, hydration on every meal.
Whichever one you are on, the habits that decide your results are tracking your dose, logging side effects so your doctor can adjust your titration, and eating in a way that fits a reduced appetite. Mello supports Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound in one place: scan your food for a GLP-1 Friendly Score, track every injection, and export a side-effects PDF for your next appointment.
