Ozempic Side Effects and How to Manage Them
Nausea is the most commonly reported Ozempic side effect when starting GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Wegovy, affecting roughly 40 to 50 percent of users in the first few weeks. The good news is that it typically peaks around dose escalation and improves significantly after four to eight weeks as your body adapts.
The most effective immediate strategy is smaller, slower meals. Eating quickly or eating a large volume of food overwhelms a digestive system that is already moving slowly. Try splitting your usual portions in half, eating the first half, waiting 15 minutes, and then deciding whether you actually need the second half.
Avoid foods that are fatty, fried, or very sweet at the start of therapy. These digest the slowest and are most likely to trigger nausea. Bland, protein-rich foods like plain chicken, boiled eggs, or plain Greek yogurt are typically easiest to tolerate in the first weeks.
Constipation is the second most common complaint. Increasing fiber gradually (not all at once, which can cause bloating) and drinking more water are the main interventions. A daily walk of 20 to 30 minutes also helps, as movement stimulates the digestive tract.
Fatigue and brain fog in the first month are real and under-reported. They are often tied to insufficient calorie intake. If you are struggling to eat 1200 to 1400 calories per day because of reduced appetite, try calorie-dense but easy-to-digest foods like nut butter on rice cakes or avocado.
Mello's Side Effects Logger lets you rate seven symptoms (nausea, fatigue, brain fog, energy, constipation, reflux, mood) on a scale of 0 to 10 each day. Over a few weeks this builds a clear pattern you can export as a PDF and share with your doctor. Your physician can use that data to adjust your titration schedule or suggest interventions.
